Project overview
Checkmate attaches EEG electrodes to victims of dating violence in blind spots to collect EEG data. The collected EEG data is visualized in real-time through EEG2IMAGE technology, enabling the police to respond immediately and collect clear evidence when a victim is in danger. This allows for swift initial action in dangerous situations and accurately records the specific circumstances of the crime scene, providing solid physical evidence for legal proceedings.
Problem Identification
Dating violence is a serious social issue that continues to increase each year, despite inadequate initial responses and low arrest rates. Even after reporting to the police, victims may not receive adequate protection due to limited measures, putting them at great risk, sometimes even leading to homicide. Addressing this issue is crucial for building a safe and inclusive society, and contributes to achieving the UN's 2030 goal of a society without exclusion.
Innovation and Creativity
BCI technology, previously utilized exclusively in the biotech and medical sectors, is now being applied to respond to criminal incidents. This technology enables real-time monitoring of crime scenes and provides concrete physical evidence, thereby facilitating strong legal actions. Checkmate ensures the safety of victims and prevents the recurrence of crimes through rapid response and apprehension, surpassing traditional investigative procedures.
Insight and Development Process
When faced with a difficult problem, we realized the importance of making progress step by step rather than trying to solve it all at once. The gap between current technologies and our ideas was so large that we didn't know what to do first. We approached it from the top down, breaking it down into smaller tasks and dividing the roles into tasks that would best utilize each team member's skills. This process helped us know what to do first.
Development Process
We specified a police administrative system that could be used to prevent dating violence crimes through EEG sensors, a mobile app, and a computer program. We experimented to improve the performance of our main technology, the EEG2IMAGE model, to see how the technology could evolve. We used Tensorflow in Colab Pro to run our experiments. Bridging the gap between technology and ideas required a deep understanding. Through constant communication and collaboration between planners, designers, and engineers, we fine-tuned the technology and ideas.
