Project Overview

Project Summary:

We have developed an application where dementia patients can engage in a "Spot the Difference" game using their past photos. When patients upload their past photos, the application utilizes generative AI technology to transform these photos. Patients can then play the "Spot the Difference" game using these two images as a source. In the process of finding the differences, dementia patients meticulously examine their old photos, allowing them to recall tiny details of past places, atmospheres, and people captured in the images. This enhances the effectiveness of Reminiscence Training.

Identifying the Challenge

The Social Problem:

Korea is grappling with a rapid increase in dementia cases, notably Alzheimer's, due to its aging population. Dementia not only affects individuals but also places caregiving burdens on families and contributes to rising healthcare costs for the elderly. With the cause of Alzheimer's still unknown, non-pharmacological treatments are vital. Our app focuses on these approaches to address the societal issues arising from dementia in terms of treatment and prevention.

Innovation and Uniqueness

Why Our Project Stands Out:

According to "The Effects of Reminiscence Training on Cognitive Function in Elderly with Dementia of the Alzheimer Type," reminiscence training can enhance emotional and cognitive functions in dementia patients. However, among 20 surveyed care facilities in Korea, only one offered such programs, and structured autobiographical reminiscence training research is scarce. Our project stands out by providing reminiscence training through a single app, addressing the underdevelopment in this area in Korea.

Insights and Development

Learning Journey:

Our project initially aimed to prevent and treat dementia by using users' past photos. However, we struggled to balance numerous features, fearing it might dilute the core idea. Through lengthy discussions, we distilled essential elements while discarding unnecessary ones, gradually honing the project's identity. Subsequently, we divided tasks according to our respective expertise, enabling us to complete the project.

Development Process:

Getting three colleagues with different majors together for a competition was quite a challenge. We all had varying opinions about one particular idea, and convincing each other to align our perspectives was tough. Sometimes, we even ended up arguing. However, through this process we realized how crucial it is to listen to each other's opinions for effective discussion.
